Welcome to the Hill City School's Music Department Website!
Hill City School's Music Department spans across kindergarten through 12th grades. At all ages students learn about music through creating, performing, responding, and connecting, in accordance with Minnesota Academic Standards and National Core Arts Standards. Some of the content covered includes the basics of music theory, how to play instruments, developing singing voices (even bandies!), and learning about the vast history of music. Music incorporates all subjects, especially math, language, science, reading, and history. Students additionally gain awareness and understanding of the 21st Century Skills employers seek in their applicants, and are introduced to how music connects our world from the past, to the present, and to the future.

We are excited to welcome back Ms. Jennifer Pierce. Ms. Pierce is from the Minneapolis area and recently moved to Grand Rapids with her puppy ("fur-baby") named Gus. Ms. Pierce attended Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota for her degree in K-12 Instrumental and General Music Education. Ms. Pierce is working on her Masters in Music Education graduate degree through University of St. Thomas, in St. Paul, Minnesota with an emphasis in Kodaly.
"Kodaly is a philosophy of education and a concept of teaching; Is a comprehensive program to train basic musical skills and teach the reading and writing of music; is an integration of many of the best ideas, techniques, and approaches to music education; is an experience-based approach to teaching." Ms. Pierce looks forward to earning certifications in Kodaly^ and Orff Schulwerk (https://aosa.org/about/what-is-orff-schulwerk/) teaching methodologies, and continuing to improve upon Band and Choir teaching through continuous teacher-education opportunities.
